Each item has a provisional difficulty parameter (b) mapped to the six CEFR bands and a discrimination parameter (a). After each response, the learner's ability estimate is updated using a bounded IRT-style step. Item selection then samples unused items near the current estimated ability, with a small random component to prevent identical sequences. This is a practical adaptive-testing scaffold; it is not a substitute for empirical IRT calibration, equating, or a validated CEFR standard-setting study.
